Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Darkthrone - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Certain styles of music work extra great at certain times of the year. Nothing beats Bob Marley on a hot summer day spent by the pool. But when the air is starting to get colder and the days get shorter, I see myself longing for some nice and icy black metal, so what better Record of the Day than one that redefined the whole genre, one that set many of the trademarks that we now see as synonymous with black metal, one that still sends shivers down your spine 30 years after its release: Darkthrone’s “A Blaze In The Northern Sky”. The deliberately lo-fi production, the simple yet brutal riffing, the chilling vocals, the eerie artwork - all of that would come to epitomize black metal. I haven’t spent many frosty winter nights in vast Norwegian woods (actually none), but I’m almost certain it would feel like what this album sounds like. Essential listening for any black metal fan.
