Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love
The second most streamed song in the summer of 2022 on the world’s biggest streaming platform, Spotify, was released in 1985. It was Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” of her album “Hounds Of Love”. All thanks to “Stranger Things”. The fragmentation of popular culture in the wake of the internet revolution has been debated a lot, but this example shows that there are still some culture phenomena that cross over to a wide audience at the same time. It’s a testament for the popularity of the series but also for widespread 80’s nostalgia. Is the music of the 80’s just so damn good that people even today can’t resist it or is it just comforting, because people associate it with a happier time whether that is fabricated or actual memory? There is probably some truth to both, but I do think that the power of great songwriting is something enduring, so however it happens, I love to see an artist like Kate Bush being appreciated even 40 years after her career started. As long as people don’t forget to give new music a chance as well.
