Tyler Childers had been writing songs and playing them on many small stages for years before Sturgill Simpson took him under his wing and produced his debut album “Purgatory”. And the attention that he gained from his affiliation to Simpson was well deserved. Childers has one of those voices that make every word sound authentic whether he’s actually singing about himself or he’s taking on the role of a character. His storytelling is brilliant, the melodies stick in your head and he effortlessly mixes traditional country with bluegrass and folk. It was his breakthrough out of his native Kentucky, the inspiration for many of his songs, onto the national scene.
