Slipknot were on top of the metal world but also on the brink of falling apart when they started working on “Vol. 3 - The Subliminal Verses”. The aftermath of relentless touring, various side projects, addiction and mental health problems made it unclear if they were gonna be able to pull together for a follow-up to “Iowa”, an album that cemented their status as one of the biggest metal bands of the day. As is often the case, the inner turmoil helped fuel their creativity. “Vol. 3” was their most diverse record up to that point. They were still brutally aggressive for a band of that commercial status, but they also made space for more melodic, quieter moments, adding new nuances to their core sound. A polarizing album that made them even bigger nevertheless.
