Steel Pulse - True Democracy
One of the great things about Steel Pulse’s classic “True Democracy” is that it combines biting social commentary with music that is extremely danceable. Sonically, it is a bright and light album, but the subject matter is very heavy. It is a record that almost didn’t see the light of day. Even though they already had three albums under their belt, they didn’t have a record deal at the time they started working on “True Democracy”. “But Jah was on our side”, as lead singer David Hinds recalled later. A small record label in Denmark had just built a new recording studio and was curious about what a reggae band would sound like in there, so they invited Steel Pulse. Shortly after they finished recording they were signed to Elektra. A reggae classic recorded in Scandinavia.
