Nirvana - Best Of
I used to not be the biggest fan of Greatest Hits compilations. I love the album format too much and there are just so many examples of when certain songs really belong together and become even more enjoyable as a whole. Plus, if you stick to those compilations, you generally miss out on too many amazing songs. But I’ve grown to accept them more over the years. Sometimes, it is nice to get a snapshot of a band’s career on one record. I think they did a pretty good job when they compiled the 2004 Nirvana “Best Of” which is technically just self-titled. Whenever I listen to “You Know You’re Right” - the only song on this compilation that hadn’t been released while Kurt was still alive - I get sad and excited at the same time. Sad because it reminds me of how much more great music Kurt probably had in him and excited because it’s just so damn brilliant. Nirvana is a band that is still being discovered freshly by each new generation and while their discography is unfortunately small enough (but also fantastic enough) that everybody new to them should just go ahead and check out all of their albums, this is actually a really great starting point.
