Archers Of Loaf - Icky Mettle
One of rock’s most legendary critics, Robert Christgau, called Archers of Loaf’s debut LP “Icky Mettle” a “tantrum set to music”. I think that was a compliment. It was the early 90’s, so obviously there was a lot of angst, and that combined with wild, squealing, fuzzing guitars being thrown at you from all angles could definitely feel like a tantrum. This record boasts an energy, at times bordering to aggression, rarely heard anymore in what is today commonly tagged Indie Rock, but underneath the maelstrom lay melodies other bands would kill for. They were most commonly compared to Pavement or Superchunk, but they carved out their own unique niche while still perfectly capturing their era.
