Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik
When Outkast released their debut album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik” in 1994, Hip Hop was dominated by the well-established and fiercely rivaling scenes on the coasts. They truly were outcasts. But they were able to put Atlanta and with that the whole South on the map. Outkast had their own distinct sound and proudly thematized life in the South. The heavy use of live instrumentation that accompanied the samples made them sound warmer and fresher than most of their contemporaries and it evoked the funk/soul spirit of old heroes such as George Clinton or Curtis Mayfield, updated for a new generation. It now stands as a classic of the genre and it forebode many more great things to come from Andre 3000 and Big Boi but also the hip hop scene in Atlanta as a whole, inspiring a wide variety of artists to put their own spin on a then still young genre no matter where they were from.
