MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
MGMT’s “Oracular Spectacular” starts with a keyboard hook that is so undeniably catchy, it pierces into your brain and won’t leave you for days. And there was more where that came from. “Time To Pretend”, “Kids” and “Electric Feel” were inescapable when they hit the airwaves in the late aughts, a time defined by crippling economical fear as well as hope for a change which in retrospect seems charmingly naive. It does make sense that their Summer of Love inspired indie rock modernized for a new generation became as big as it did when it did. The timing was perfect. But this album is more than just its mega-singles. It’s quirky enough to be interesting but also catchy and bright enough to appeal to the masses. Thanks to the great songwriting it has aged really well and still sounds fresh today.
