Arcade Fire - WE
At some points in band’s careers they seemingly can’t win anymore. Either they stick to their core sound and are accused of repeating themselves. Or they experiment and they’re accused of straying too far from their roots (in the 90’s people called it selling out). Arcade Fire’s ventures in different sonic territories on their latest albums caused mixed reviews from their fanbase, so “WE” was by many looked at as a comeback, a return to their roots. It seems as though they made peace with the fact that one of the things they’re so great at is being unapologetically grandiose. But they didn’t compromise their artistic integrity. When listening closer, you can still hear “weird” moments, experimentation, sounds that aren’t “normal” rock - something that was in reality always part of them. They have always been unique and they still are.
