What makes the music of New Orleans so great is exactly the same as what makes the city as a whole great. It’s a unique melting pot. Trombone Shorty has been one of the most valuable ambassadors of New Orleans music in recent years and he’s not letting up on “Lifted”. It captures the liveliness and positive energy of his live performances and borrows from funk, R&B, soul, jazz, even rock. The fact that Blue Note Records has picked him up (this is his second album on the legendary label) shows how highly respected he is well beyond the Crescent City. He dedicated this album to his mother, Lois Nelson Andrews, who passed away recently. The cover is a beautiful picture of her lifting him up at a second line when he was a little boy who had clearly already fallen in love with music. But instead of a mournful album, he delivered one that celebrates life and that was a great choice.
