Ministry had been making noise of various forms for over ten years before “ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ” (or “Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs”) was released. It became what many consider their magnum opus. They had started using guitars more prominently over the years, but on this album they were front and center, essentially creating the blueprint for industrial metal. They combined their heavy riffs with militaristic rhythms, distorted vocals and tons of samples, culminating in unique, hypnotic, aggressive soundscapes. The stories of the debauchery surrounding its creation are legendary. $1,000 a day were spent on drugs as Uncle Al reported. Not to promote performance-enhancing substances, but it’s hard to imagine that this mad masterpiece could have ever come to fruition without them.
