Pixies - Doolittle
The Pixies can be loud and abrasive but also sweet and catchy. Often during the same (mostly very short) songs. Those different sides never came together quite as perfectly as on “Doolittle”. The decision to hire Gil Norton who produced bands like Echo & The Bunnymen or Throwing Muses wasn’t welcomed by many peers but proved to be a wise one. He cleaned up their sound without taking away their weirdness and at times eerie vibe that makes them so special. The album’s loud-and-quiet dynamics, the balance between indie rock, punk and straight-up poppy melodies influenced countless bands and foreshadowed the explosion of alternative rock in the 90’s. But besides its massive cultural impact, this record is first and foremost a collection of intense and memorable songs from a band at its creative peak.
