It’s impossible to talk about Irma Thomas without referring to her as the Soul Queen of New Orleans. At this point she holds the title pretty much officially. There are many wonderful records of hers, but we chose “Irma Thomas Sings” from the Bandy Records New Orleans Series, originally released in 1979, as one of many showcases of her brilliance. Singing has always been an integral part of her being, something that was natural to her from early on. She got fired for singing on the job twice when she was young and she now - at 81 - still sings almost every Sunday in the gospel choir at her local church. That passion for music can be heard in every note. She has such beautiful tone and one of those instantly recognizable voices, one that has been heard and enjoyed way beyond New Orleans for many decades.
