As part of the Fugees Lauryn Hill had already become a superstar before she released her debut album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”. But this was her declaration of independence. She was running free, finding her own voice whether she was rapping or singing. That voice was confrontational and vulnerable at the same time. The musical and lyrical sophistication on this record makes it hard to believe that she was only 22 years old when she made it, burdened by the immense pressure of high expectations but not crushed by it. The seamless blend of hip hop, soul and reggae was presented with a beautifully warm tone, reminiscent of old soul records.
