Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There

Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There

An album by a septet that includes violin and saxophone alongside traditional rock instruments and presents a wild mix of rock, post-punk, free jazz, and even some classical influences, packaged in songs that are mostly over 6 minutes long (the closer exceeds the 12-minute mark) doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. But somehow Black Country, New Road make all of this work on their fantastic album “Ants From Up There”. It’s a true journey, one that demands attention to unfold all of its glory. Despite its complexity the music is emotionally touching - largely thanks to Isaac Wood’s cryptic yet strangely relatable lyrics and beautiful vocal melodies. This record ebbs and flows. It’s full of dynamics, masterfully used to make the quiet moments feel extra intimate and the collective eruptions sound even more triumphant.
