Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Whenever I listen to Emperor’s “Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk” the first adjective that comes to mind is “intense”. Everything is dialed up. Maximum aggression, maximum speed, maximum darkness. But there was one thing that set Emperor apart from their black metal peers on their early albums: maximum bombast. They were one of the first ones in the genre that used keyboards and they did it without making their music softer in any kind of way. With that they set a template for many extreme bands that started incorporating symphonic elements into their music. A landmark album, but not one for the faint-hearted.
