Mdou Moctar - Afrique Victime
Is this what Eddie Van Halen would have sounded like had he been born in Africa? Possibly. Mdou Moctar’s “Afrique Victime” is a wonderful melange of Saharan music and influences from Western guitar heroes. Moctar’s playing is extraordinarily colorful - sometimes flashy and bluesy, sometimes tender and restrained. Most of the songs are sung in the Tuareg language Tamasheq. This doesn’t sound like a recipe for international success, but it’s great to see that he was actually able to break through into the Western music world exposing people to sounds that they normally wouldn’t hear.
