I always found it interesting that the two epicenters of early Death Metal were two places that couldn’t be more different at first glance: Sweden and Florida. The compilation “Death In Gothenburg” is a wonderful snapshot of the Gothenburg scene in the early 90’s, right before many of these bands would take the metal world by storm. It contains early demos by now legendary bands such as In Flames or Dark Tranquillity and features guys who later played in bands like Hammerfall, Tiamat, Engel or Puteraeon. This tightly knit scene created a sound distinct from their American counterparts who explored the extreme fringes of guitar music simultaneously thousands of miles away. It was a sound that would change the course of metal history for decades to come.
