Archers of Loaf - Reason In Decline
Archers of Loaf - Reason In Decline
Writing a comeback album is a tricky thing. Especially when it’s been 24 years since your last record. When Archers of Loaf released “White Trash Heroes” in 1998, Bill Clinton was President (barely holding on), the internet still seemed like a promise for a better future and the average cost for a gallon of gas was a little over a dollar. It was a different world. They could have chosen to give their old fans a nice dose of nostalgia by pretending to be the same angry kids as they were in the 90’s and rehashing their old sound. But they didn’t. Thankfully. “Reason In Decline” shows a much more mature version of Archers of Loaf. “Mature” often translates to “boring”, but not in this case. This record is a triumph, a masterclass of excellent songwriting, musically and lyrically. It is just as emotionally intense as their old work, precisely because it’s so different. People change, the world changes, life stays challenging but for different reasons. It’s an honest album and it shows where they are now, not a shadow of what they were over two decades ago. But maybe the best way to describe it would be in one word: beautiful. One of the best albums I have had the pleasure of discovering this year.
