Record of the Day - 03/06/2022
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Skid Row. The song was “Youth Gone Wild” - their declaration of intent, their anthem. It starts with one of the all-time greatest rock riffs, one of those you can sing along to. Then comes Sebastian, the perfect rock singer. He sounded intense, aggressive, full of energy yet always melodic. Naturally, I had to get the whole album, their self-titled debut - our Record of the Day. And I wasn’t disappointed. Guns N’ Roses had paved the way for rock to be dirty and dangerous again while other bands brought glitter and make-up to unprecedented extremes. Perfect timing for Skid Row. They were heavy enough for the rockers and sprinkled in such undeniably catchy and beautiful ballads that they could break into the mainstream. Sebastian’s looks didn’t hurt. This album was one of the last hurrahs of sleazy rock before the guys from Seattle took over. And it’s still so much fun.
