Record of the Day - 04/14/2022
All of the Lynyrd Skynyrd albums before that tragic plane crash are stone cold classics, but “Gimme Back My My Bullets” - our Record of the Day - is the most underrated one. They changed things up a bit despite the success of their first three albums and brought in Tom Dowd who worked with legends such as Eric Clapton or Rod Stewart to produce the album. The result was the most polished sounding Skynyrd album up to that point, but the grit that made this band so special can still be heard. And the songwriting is as superb as it always was on those first five immortal records - musically and lyrically. Ronnie Van Zandt was way more clever, witty and thoughtful than many give him credit for, distinctively different from the very conservative rhetoric his brother steered the band into later. Cuts like the title song, “Double Trouble” or “Searching” became fan favorites despite this being the lowest selling of their classic albums. Lynyrd Skynyrd are the undisputed kings of Southern Rock, but that tag is too small for them. They belong in the pantheon of rock overall.
