Record of the Day - 05/19/2022
Ani DiFranco has always done things her own way. She never signed a label deal and instead founded her own label when she was only 19. She runs it to this day. When she wrote and recorded her self-titled debut album - our Record of the Day - at the tail end of the 80’s, it wasn’t as common and as easy as it is today to do your own recordings. Not a problem for her. This album is a wonderfully stripped down folk album - just a girl singing her phones into a microphone as she put it looking back many years later. It was recorded in about three hours. This approach gives her beautiful voice space to shine and puts her honest lyrics to the forefront. It was the beginning of an impressive musical career that was accompanied by countless acts of political and social activism. There was finally a space in the music mainstream for strong, independent women in the 90’s and Ani DiFranco was one of the forerunners.
