Record of the Day - 09/03/2022
Many consider “Piñata” - our Record of the Day - one of the best hip hop albums of the 2010’s. It was Freddie Gibbs’ and Madlib’s first collaborative studio album. Gibbs is a gifted and honest storyteller, a “gangster rapper”, but one who leaves space for moments of introspection. That consciousness makes his stories all the more interesting. But to me the producer aka beat creator is just as important in hip hop. And Madlib brings his A-game on this album. He’s a master at creating smooth yet hard-hitting beats, often inspired by jazz and soul. His soundscapes alone would make for an amazing record. Gibbs’ and Madlib’s skills matched up perfectly, elevating each other to the highest levels and resulting in a record that many called an instant classic upon its release and it has certainly held up almost a decade later.
