It is a demand.Across it's runtime, The Spiritual Sound traces a narrative arc through extremes: searing, sky-cracking catharsis on side A; a slow-burning, devotional undercurrent on side B. The album is largely a fusing of the visions of it's two principal songwriters, Dan Meyer and Leah Levinson: distinct voices, deeply complementary.Meyer writes like someone clawing toward the divine through noise, channeling Zen Buddhism, historical collapse, ecstatic grief. For more than three decades, Converge have delivered musical and emotional catharsis, putting purpose before perception and intent before interpretation. Whether it�s their 2001 landmark recording Jane Doe or their 2021 Bloodmoon: I collaboration with Chelsea Wolfe, they have created some of the most compelling music, lyrics, and visual art of the 21st century. During that time, fewer bands have had a greater impact on the underground imagination. It seems unlikely that anyone who has been making music for this long would create one of their best works for their eleventh album, in their 35th year as a band. And yet: Love is Not Enough might be the apotheosis of Converge�s decades-long journey through the punk, hardcore and metal microcosm. What vocalist/lyricist Jacob Bannon, guitarist/producer Kurt Ballou, bassist/vocalist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller have created is a strident artistic statement on the turmoil of living that hones their collective strengths to a razor�s edge. There isn�t an ounce of fat. Every song moves with a power and purpose that eclipses their human origins, that speaks to the anger, pain, and frustration of the modern age. From the opening fusillade of the title track to the closing hurricane of �We Were Never the Same,� Love Is Not Enough is a sonorous balance of vitality and viciousness that reflects the chaos and uncertainty of the times we live in. �There�s always obstacles in the world,� Bannon says. �Personal, professional, economical, whatever. But I feel like we�re in a pressure cooker somewhere on our evolutionary line. It�s a lot just to be a human being in the modern world, trying to function, maintain, grow, have empathy, have compassion. It takes more than it used to, to do all those things.� The album title itself says everything about the trials of today. �The line �Love is not enough� is something I had kicking around for a while,� Bannon says. �Some of the things I wrote at the time were from a human resilience perspective, an acceptance of the brutality and unforgiving nature of the world. I was reflecting on that in poetic form and set it aside. When we got into the studio, it all fit together.� �Bad Faith� is a deeply personal song about cruel intentions and limited options. �It came from watching someone I love being wronged and broken apart, and there was nothing I could do about it because there was no good intention in the first place,� Bannon says. �It�s that feeling of helplessness because nothing I could do or say could better the situation. I just had to love and support and do what I could to be there. But I couldn�t effect actual change. That�s a horrible feeling.� �We Were Never The Same� recognizes the unrelatable in even the closest of relations. �That one was written about getting together with people at a funeral, finding commonality among a variety of people in your life at a time of loss and grief,� Bannon says. �We�ve all been through some version of that in our lives. If you listen to heavy music, you appreciate the time, you appreciate the faces, you appreciate the histories with different people and loved ones. But then the next day comes, all the regular stressors of everyday life kick in, and you don�t really connect the way you wish to after reflecting on the loss of somebody. I was processing all that stuff when I wrote the line, �Why do we all gather to mourn yet not to cherish?� It�s an honest question.� Love Is Not Enough features no special guests, no studio trickery, no relentless massaging of human imperfection in trying to manufacture the perfect take. �I think that realism is missing from a lot of modern music of any genre, but especially our genre,� Bannon says. �Things either go super raw and almost chaotic to the point where it's distracting, or bands take the life out of what they�re doing by editing every aspect. Sometimes the perfect take is the one that has some wildness to it. It's not perfectly executed. There�s a lot of powerful moments on this record and a lot of angry moments. The realism amplifies that.� Unlike so many albums that adhere to a time-honored sequencing format, cherry-picking favored tracks for the all-important first, second, and final spots, Love Is Not Enough is all about momentum. �It does a thing that no other Converge record does�it keeps ramping up,� Bannon says. �And that�s definitely by design. Internally, we passed around dozens of ideas for sequencing because everyone interprets music differently and there�s no right way of doing it. When we do that, we always joke that we all have to be equally unhappy. But this is the one that works.� Love Is Not Enough was recorded and mixed by Kurt Ballou at God City in Salem, Massachusetts, with engineering assistance from Zach Weeks. Jacob Bannon did the artwork and design, creating an image for each song and a commanding cover depicting a celestial witness to a world aflame. �We still identify this band as the outlet that�s essential to our lives,� Bannon says. �We give everything we have to it. Being past your average middle age, we�re starting to see deeper than before into a variety of places. And I don�t think that�s specific to us. I think that�s something that�s utterly relatable.�

KeiyaA wrote, composed and produced the music on hooke's law over the course of 5-years and finished as she was working on milk thot. Throughout hooke's law, keiyaA does the perilous work of deconstructing and rebuilding her ego so that no one else can do it for her. Anxious' second album Bambi arrives this winter on Run For Cover Records. It's been a whirlwind few years for the Fairfield, Connecticut five-piece - since the release of their debut album Little Green House, there's been little time for anything other than consistent touring with bands like Bayside, Drug Church and The Wonder Years. Somewhere during that endless grind, vocalist Grady Allen was sitting in a hotel room and stumbled upon a name typed into a long-forgotten memo on his phone: Bambi. "We should have named the band Bambi," he recalls admitting to his bandmates. Bambi stuck with the band after that night and eventually it evolved from a "what-if" into the name of Anxious' second full-length album.Bambi is a record of remarkable growth, depth, ambition, and energy. It takes all the unsolvable and unavoidable problems of exiting adolescence and makes them resonate in urgent and authentic new ways. The album has deep roots in the storied lineage of Northeast tri-state hardcore and emo, but it also fully embraces the widescreen alternative rock songwriting at which Anxious have previously only hinted. Because of their mix of hellified gangster shit and progressive compositions, I once jokingly called Clipping "Deathrow Tull." Well, it's not a joke anymore. While Clipping's last few projects have been record-long concepts like classic prog rock, their cyberpunk-infused new album Dead Channel Sky is mixtape-like, a carefully curated collection in which every track is a love letter to a possible present. It sounds crisp and classic at the same time. When something strikes us as retrospective and futuristic at the same time, it's a reminder of how slipshod our present moment truly is. Juxtaposing high-tech, corporate command-and-control systems (the "cyber") with the lo-fi, D.I.Y. underground (the "punk"), cyberpunk proper starts in 1982 and ends in 1999, from Blade Runner to The Matrix. Concurrently, hip-hop matured, went through it's Golden Era, then melted into further forms: it went from from Fab 5 Freddy to Public Enemy to Missy Elliott. While other genres flirted with it, hip-hop was fickle and fey. Rap and rock birthed mutant offspring maligned by most, and hip-hop's relations with electronica rarely fared any better.What if someone explicitly merged hip-hop and cyberpunk - those twin suns of the '80s and '90s - into one set and sound? After all, both movements are the result of hacking the haunted leftovers of a war-torn culture that's long since moved on.On Dead Channel Sky, Clipping texture-map the twin histories of hip-hop and cyberpunk onto an alternate present where Rammellzee and Bambaataa are the superheroes of old; where Cybotron and Mantronix are the reigning legends; where Egyptian Lover and Freestyle are debated endlessly, and Ultramag and Public Enemy are the undeniable forefathers; where the lost movements of 1980s and the 1990s are still happening: rave, trip-hop, hip-house, acid house, drum & bass, big beat-the detritus of a different timeline, the survivors of armed audio warfare. Clipping are no strangers to sci-fi: two of their records were nominated for Hugo Awards (one of science fiction's top literary prizes), and a novella spun-off from their music was nominated for a third. On Dead Channel Sky, Clipping's co-conspirators include everyone from the guitarist Nels Cline, to their labelmates Cartel Madras, rapper/actor Tia Nomore, and wordsmith Aesop Rock. Diggs is known for intricate lyrics and rapid-fire rapping, and the tracks that Snipes and Hutson build in the background are no less complex. All of the above serves to give us a glimpse of an adjacent possible present, where hip-hop and cyberpunk are one culture.Binary stars are often perceived as one object when viewed with the naked eye. Like those twin sun systems, it'll take some special equipment and some discerning attention to pull the stars apart on this record. As Diggs barks on the fire-starting "Change the Channel": Everything is very important!

The Live Laugh Love campaign is rooted in themes of wellness, growth, and the philosophy behind the album title, Live Laugh Love. While irony is used as a tool for laughter, the sentiment is real. It reflects Earl�s current way of life, choosing joy while staying grounded in truth. LLL brings a sense of nostalgia. It reminds us of a time when life felt full of simplicity and genuine connection. But this isn�t blind optimism. Blood, guts, and darkness live alongside the joy. LLL holds space for contradiction and chooses love anyway.

"Borderland" is the first Amorphis album produced in collaboration with Danish producer Jacob Hansen. Before that, we had made three amazing records at Jens Bogren�s studio. During the planning phase of the project, we strongly felt that it was time to explore something new and see what working with a different producer might bring to the table. Amorphis has a very distinctive sound and our own way of making music. Having six strong personalities in the band naturally brings its own challenges to the production process, especially for the producer. Jacob was chosen for a couple of key reasons: he has worked with an impressively diverse range of artists, and he�s an incredibly calm, creative, and idea-driven producer. Once again, the lyrics were written by Pekka Kainulainen, and the album artwork is by Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren. Sixteen years and five albums after the Pennsylvania band�s formation, progressive death metal progenitors Rivers of Nihil are upping the ante with their 2025 self-titled album Rivers of Nihil. Patterson Hood's first solo record in over a decade was born out of a friendship with producer Chris Funk (The Decemberists). The pair would often perform together for fun and during Hood's solo tours, making far-off plans to make a record together. They eventually went into Jackpot Studios in Portland. "Honey Water" plumbs the quiet rage of a woman married to an unfaithful man, watching him cede again and again to lust like a base insect perpetuating it's own demise.Sadness is indeed the dominant emotional key of this record, but it is sadness of a rarified form: the pensive, prescient sadness of melancholy, in which the recognition of life's essentially tragic character occurs with sensitivity to it's fleeting beauty. Zauner finds space enough inside it for glimmers of hope. They are the consolations of mortals that poets before her have called out to and that poets after will continue to rediscover: love and labor, and though they run like tonic resolutions through the record's many episodes, they sound most saliently on it's final song, "Magic Mountain," an engagement with Thomas Mann's famous novel of the same name. For her, making any work feels like scaling a mountain, but from the perch of For Melancholy Brunettes, she surveys the future.

After seven years, Japandroids have returned with Fate and Alcohol, their fourth and final full-length. Written in part while the Vancouver duo-guitarist-vocalist Brian King and drummer-vocalist David Prowse-were touring behind their 2017 ANTI- debut, Near to the Wild Heart of Life, the album is at once a return to form and a thrilling step forward, testament to the sort of chemistry that they've honed over the course of 18 years and hundreds of shows side-by-side. Their aim was simply to write songs that they'd enjoy playing live, without sacrificing any of the nuance or ambition that marked their previous effort. Nowhere on this record is that more deeply felt than lead single "Chicago," a song whose sheer momentum feels inevitable and true-from the inherent romance of it's opening chords to the series of snare-led explosions that see it through. Like the rest of Fate and Alcohol, it was recorded in Vancouver with longtime collaborator Jesse Gander, who also engineered 2009's Post-Nothing and 2012's Celebration Rock. "The very first demo we have of "Chicago" was recorded in our jam space on February 4th, 2020," King says, "and if you listen to that, it just sounds like a rough version of what you hear on the record. But it's all there. That, in some ways, is the most ideal circumstance for a band like us: just having something that really rips in your jam space, something that feels good, something that you're excited about."

For the past decade, SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE have honed an aesthetic like no other. They�ve chopped up samples, chewed them up, spit them back out again, baby birded it. Across four albums and a smattering of EPs, Zack Schwartz, Corey Wichlin, and Rivka Ravede have fully solidified their stance as some of rock�s weirdest and best deconstructionists. 2018�s Hypnic Jerks was a study in noise punk sampledelia. It was a breakthrough for the band. Frank Ocean became a fan, spinning �fell asleep with a vision,� on Blonded Radio. 2021�s ENTERTAINMENT DEATH, was nasty dream pop by way of K-Mart realism and hitting the channel search setting on an old TV set. Their last release, 2023�s i�m so lucky, explored the breakup between Schwartz and Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band�s fifth record, YOU�LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING. This latest offering is the most crystallized version of the band�s aesthetic, a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows. It is a meticulous, beautiful, and quietly heartbreaking collection of songs. More often than not, it sounds like listening to a walkman from inside of a hurricane, like the YouTube videos you�d watch in bed for 18 hours straight after you break your wrist from a skateboarding accident. The goal in making YOU�LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING was to soften out some of the edges. �Less hard left turns,� says Wichlin. �We wanted to make something intentionally less antagonistic,� he jokes. In practice, this means the record has slightly fewer drastic arrangement changes, and it is more stripped down. Take �I�VE BEEN EVIL,� one of the newest songs on the record, as one such offering. It is straightforward in that its tempo is consistent, in that the song keeps us in the same place. It does not digress. It holds itself steady, with bleary-eyed guitars and hushed vocals. The song is weary, the song is a whisper. The utterance �I�ve been evil,� is like the shrug of a shoulder, a so what, ha ha. Less straightforward is the sublime �LET THE VIRGIN DRIVE,� a genuinely frightening pop track that anchors itself on fucked up Japanese City pop samples and a demented news clip of someone screaming. The song was originally written around the time the band was touring ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH, and took a few years to fully flesh itself out. It is like staring into the sun, like waking up in a body bag �It�s about unrequited love and making up a situation or whole life in your head,� says Schwartz of its thematic underpinning, �The other person finally �sees you� and your �problems are solved,� but they aren�t, really.� The song hiccups and warbles � you can hear the tape hiss, the instability, how it kind of feels like the whole song might get sucked into a black hole�s event horizon. �Heaven is a lie/cause you are earthly/and you�re alive,� Schwartz sings at the song�s outset. YOU�LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING is a record of provocations. It wants you to think it is just normal rock �n� roll music. That it is purely pleasure oriented. But beneath these intentions is a collection of songs that are as complex as ever. The Ravede-led �FOUND A BODY,� is a downtempo smoke cloud of variegated synths. �Found a body,� she sings �No one can touch me.� �SUN SWEPT THE EVENING RED,� starts out disconcertingly chipper, before breaking down into an assault of sludged out guitars, auto-tuned vocals, a flurry of strings. Like all SPIRIT records, It is music made by three distinct voices, written independently and then assembled together. Despite being written all over the globe, with Ravede in Portugal and Schwartz and Wichlin back in Philadelphia, the trio arrived at the same themes: that of the brutality of coming to terms with reality, that of what it means to lie to protect yourself and your heart. Schwartz says he writes songs more or less in a stream of consciousness. The band listens to very little outside music when working. The result is a record that very much is its own world. Where chaos is carefully organized, where being able to ever actually chill out is totally illusory, a trick mirror.

Following the disbanding of bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard's previous group Mother Love Bone, the two recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarist Mike McCready, and drummer Dave Krusen to form Pearl Jam in 1990. Most of the songs began as instrumental jams, to which Vedder added lyrics about topics such as depression, homelessness, and abuse. Twenty Twenty:�Joe Keery, who you may also recognize from the show �Stranger Things,� began playing music in his teens after co-opting his sister�s guitar, but it was during his college years at DePaul University in Chicago that he formed his first band and began to seriously pursue music. That band was Post Animal, the heavy psych rock outfit that went on to release a self-titled EP and two subsequent albums via Polyvinyl. Members Only is a group XXXTentacion formed as he was still bubbling beneath the surface of the mainstream. Group members have included Ski Mask the Slump God, Kid Trunks, Craig Xen, Killstation, Coolie Cut, Bass Santana, Flyboy Tarantino, Tankhead and Kin$oul. In coordination with the band, Org Music has overseen the restoration and remastering of the iconic Bad Brains' recordings. With One Day, Fucked Up have delivered one of the most energizing and intricate�albums of their career, a massive-sounding record that arrives in deceptively small�confines. The Canadian hardcore legends have been known for their epic scale in the�past, so it might be a surprise that Fucked Up�s sixth studio album is their shortest to�date, written and recorded in the confines of one literal day (hence the title). Don�t�mistake size for substance, though: The band�s sound has only gotten bigger, more�hard-charging, with even denser thickets of melody.�

�I wanted to see what I could record in literally one day.� That singular idea came�to mind for guitarist Mike Haliechuk in the closing months of 2019. Haliechuk got�himself into a studio and proceeded to write and record the record�s ten tracks over�three eight-hour sessions, reconnecting with the core the band�s songwriting essence�in the process.�

Initially, Fucked Up vocalist Damian Abraham was also set to complete his vocals in�similar fashion�that is, before the lockdowns of 2020 took place. As it turns out,�the isolation yielded creative dividends, as Abraham returned to contributing lyrics�as well for the first time since 2014�s Glass Boys. �It almost felt like it might be the�last time I�d ever get to record vocals for anything,� Abraham says of the stakes he�felt while putting his part to tape, before reflecting on how he approached the lyrical�process: �What do I want to say to friends who aren�t here anymore? What do I want�to say to myself?��

Over swarms of tuneful noise that evoke Sonic Youth circa Daydream Nation,�Abraham lets loose on gentrification in �Lords of Kensington,� which was inspired�by an �incredible� Toronto neighborhood that was regularly subject to life-ruining�police surveillance and structural violence. �The police chief during that era�he just�opened a cannabis store,� Abraham explains. �It�s so cynical and gross, what society�has come to�but by being in a band, we�re culpable in changing the neighborhood,�too, since the punk spaces and cool happenings that pop up are part of�gentrification. Are you building a culture? Or are you ruining something that�s already�been there?��

Then there�s the dusky burn of �Cicada,� a sonic cousin to Dose Your Dreams��excellent standout �The One I Want Will Come for Me� that features Haliechuk�taking lead-vocal duty. The song is dedicated to lost friends, and in his words, it�s�about �what life is like after you lose people, and our responsibility to carry them�forward into the future, using the things they taught us as a light. I like to imagine the�sound of cicadas as a metaphor for our strange life in the subculture�we all just live�these weird little hidden lives under the dirt, and then once in a generation, one of�us gets to bust out of the dirt and intone their song so loud that it can be heard all�over.�

One Day is an undeniable work of confidence from a band that continues to operate�at the top of their game, making music that�s guaranteed to last a lifetime and beyond.

Like it's predecessors in the series, this double LP edition is on color vinyl; the A/B side is green marble and C/D side is on red marble. The songs on Afrodisiac were tracks that Fela and the Nigeria 70 (Later Africa 70) re-recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1972 after they had become hits in Nigeria. The best known song on the album is 'Jeun Ko Ku', a satire about gluttony and Fela's first major hit across West Africa. In Pidgin English the title means "chop and quench", which, in turn, means "eat and die" in Standard English.

Since the band's inception in 1992, Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch intended his beloved band to be a collaborative project, an ever-evolving group of musicians making music and playing live together. "I wanted to switch the lineup for many reasons. Each time we finish a record I want the next one to sound totally different. It's fun to play with people who bring in new styles and ideas, " says Martsch. "And it's nice to be in a band with people who aren't sick of me yet." Following several albums and EPs on Pacific Northwest independent labels, including the indie-rock classic, There's Nothing Wrong With Love, released on Sub Pop offshoot Up Records in 1994, Martsch signed with Warner Brothers from 1995 to 2016. He and his rotating cast of cohorts recorded six more great albums during that time - Perfect From Now On, Keep It Like a Secret, Ancient Melodies of the Future, You In Reverse, Untethered Moon, There Is No Enemy. There was also a live album, and a solo record, Now You Know. While the band's impeccable recorded catalog is the entry point, Built to Spill live is an essential force of it's own: heavy, psychedelic, melodic, and visceral tunes blaring from amps that sound as if they're powered by Mack trucks. Now in 2022, Built to Spill returns with When the Wind Forgets Your Name, Martsch's unbelievably great new album (and his eighth full-length)... with a fresh new label. "I'm psyched: I've wanted to be on Sub Pop since I was a teenager. And I think I'm the first fifty year-old they've ever signed." (The rumors are true, we love quinquagenarians...). After Martsch tracked guitars and vocals, they group collaborated from afar to mix the album. What emerged is When the Wind Forgets Your Name, a complex and cohesive blend of the artists' distinct musical ideas. Alongside Built to Spill's poetic lyrics and themes, the experimentation and attention to detail produces an album full of unique, vivid, and timeless sounds, from guitar-driven rock odes to REM and Dinosaur Jr to bluesy '60s-style anthems to dub-reggae-inspired instrumentation. Through her work, Ayewa illuminates the principles of her multidisciplinary collaborative practice Black Quantum Futurism, a theoretical framework for perceiving and adjusting reality through art, writing, music, and performance, informed by historical Black ontologies.The songwriter, composer, vocalist, poet, and educator Camae Ayewa spent years organizing and performing in Philadelphia's underground music community before moving to Los Angeles to teach composition at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music. She released her debut album as Moor Mother, Fetish Bones, in 2016, and has since put out an abundance of acclaimed music, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians who share her drive to dig up the untold. She has performed and recorded with the free jazz groups Irreversible Entanglements and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and made records with billy woods, Mental Jewelry, and YATTA.

After three studio albums and over a decade deep into the music game, THE INTERRUPTERS deliver their new album, In The Wild. This 14-track opus is the real deal; it�s a story of survival, a story of resilience, by a band being bold and rejecting the easy impulses of simply repeating what�s worked before. The follow-up to their 2018 breakthrough album, Fight The Good Fight, which spawned multiple singles including �She�s Kerosene�, with over 50 Million streams to date. This reissue will be available worldwide on a single CD or color vinyl 2-LP on June 24, 2022. Both formats include the original album, remastered by JJ Golden (Pearl Jam, Thee Oh Sees), as well as 12 previously unreleased demos from the era (rediscovered recently in the archives of the band�s original A&R guy, Geoffrey Weiss). The double vinyl edition�the album on translucent turquoise, the demos on translucent orange�arrives in a slick gatefold jacket. In some ways, Neurotica can be viewed as a This Is Your Life�esque document of what brothers Jeff McDonald and Steve McDonald had been working towards creatively since starting Redd Kross in their Hawthorne, CA, living room circa 1978. The songs quake with punk rock fury, no doubt about it� I mean, how could they possibly have shaken off all that untamed energy of their early years (the Red Cross years, one might call them) after it helped build such a strong foundation for Southern California hardcore punk & DIY culture (and, arguably, indie rock as a whole) alongside bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Descendents? But that fury is only one part of the Neurotica formula. To find the other parts, you�d have to go back to the early- to mid-�70s when the McDonalds, then adolescents, lived for nothing but Saturday morning cartoons, sugary cereals, bubblegum pop singles and Beach Boys LPs, Partridge Family TV specials, and the bombastic arena-rock guitars of acts like KISS and Cheap Trick. Whereas classic �60s/�70s radio and pop culture schmaltz served as fodder for most self-respecting punk rockers of the time to sneer at (even if they secretly were fans), it formed a tremendous part of the Redd Kross DNA. The band wore these influences on their day-glo sleeves and didn�t really care who was offended. The McDonalds enlisted a grand crew of musicians that included guitarist Robert Hecker, keyboardist Paul Roessler (Screamers, Nervous Gender), and Roy McDonald (The Muffs) on drums. And in the producer�s chair guiding the young bucks? Tommy Erdelyi, aka Tommy Ramone, one of the originators of punk rock melody. Unshakeable hooks would inspire rave reviews at the time of the album�s original release in 1987. The L.A. Times� Craig Lee wrote: �In an age when too many bands base their music either on calculated career moves or heavy-handed pretensions, Redd Kross is as breezy as a kiss in the wind, a band born to rock in a world that forgot how.� Plain and simple, Neurotica is just a fantastic piece of art. Unsurprising that something of this caliber would hatch from the minds of two brothers who changed the face of punk rock before they were old enough to drive a car, and the face of alternative rock before they were old enough to rent one.

Songs created in the shadow of terror and loss, but that crackle and pop with defiance, wrestled into being over one of the most extra-ordinary years in recent history. The complete vision, that top-to-bottom rigour, is what makes the second album from Working Men's Club such a stunning and totally unique achievement. "The title summarises a mood that's been around for 18 months - and, in fact, for a lot longer. There's a miserable kind of war that's going on. People are scared of things aside from coronavirus. It documents time during lockdown to an extent, but it isn't just about that," he explains. "The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on." Making the busy feel finessed and the dreadful feel magical - Fear Fear manages those feats, and then some. Or, as Syd Minksy-Sargeant puts it: "We just set out to make the best-sounding album we could."

"Fresh grief, like fresh love, has a way of sharpening our vision and bringing on painful clarifications. No matter how temporary we know these states to be, the vulnerability and transformation they demand can overpower the strongest among us.

Then there are the rare, fertile moments when both occur, when mourning and limerence heighten, complicate and explain each other; the songs that comprise Angel Olsen�s Big Time were forged in such a whiplash.

�I can�t say that I�m sorry / when I don�t feel so wrong anymore,� the record begins, her voice softer and more open than ever, as if she�s singing through a hard won smile. �All the Good Times�, a twangy banger with nods to JJ Cale, starts the album on a triumphant and bright note. The title song, �Big Time�, follows and continues the warm optimism. �Guess I had to be losin� to get here on time,� she sings, a fearless love song co-written with her partner.

Big Time is an album about the expansive power of new love, but this brightness and optimism is tempered by a profound and layered sense of loss. During Olsen�s process of coming to terms with her queerness and confronting the traumas that had been keeping her from fully accepting herself, she felt it was time to come out to her parents, a hurdle she�d been avoiding for some time.

�Some experiences just make you feel as though you�re five years old, no matter how wise or adult you think you are,� she writes of that time. After that tearful but relieving conversation, she celebrated with her partner, their friends, oysters, and wine. �Finally, at the ripe age of 34, I was free to be me.�

Three days later, her father died; his funeral became the occasion for Olsen to introduce her partner to her family. Though she was fearful their presence as a newly out queer couple would be �an additional symbol of loss,� those days went peacefully, yet only two weeks later Olsen got the call that her mother was in the ER. Hospice came soon after, and a second funeral came quickly on the heels of the first. Another trip back to St. Louis, another grief to face, another deepening and intensification of this still-new love.

The shards of this grief�the shortening of her chance to finally be seen more fully by her parents�are scattered throughout the album. �It�s a hard time again,� she sings on �This is How It Works�, pushing against the irrevocability of death, �Tell me a story that will make me forget.� �Go Home�, which begins with an almost numbed calm, slowly builds up to a wailing that comes up straight from the ground: �I want to go home, go back to small things. I don�t belong here. Nobody knows me.�

�You can�t plan grief, you can�t organize it or schedule it or know how you�ll feel when it comes. It just happens, and when it does sometimes it�s not what you thought it would be.� Three weeks after her mother�s funeral she was in the studio, recording this incredibly wise and tender new album.

Loss has long been a subject of Olsen�s elegiac songs, but few can write elegies with quite the reckless energy as she. If that bursting-at-the-seams, running downhill energy has come to seem intractable to her work, this album proves Olsen is now writing from a more rooted place of clarity. She�s working with an elastic, expansive mastery of her voice�both sonically and artistically. These are songs not just about transformational mourning, but of finding freedom and joy in the privations as they come.

Playful bits of Tammy Wynette and Kitty Wells are here, too, but so are the complex orchestrations of her genre-bending 2019 record, All Mirrors. While that record was full of dramatic shifts and twists, here the surprises come in their simplicity�a slow swell of strings, instrumentation that cycles like a storm, or sparkling horns in a light-flooded break-up ballad.

While the spritely nature of her last EP, Aisles, may have signaled Olsen�s turn deeper into the electronic direction of her last All Mirrors, there�s hardly a synth in sight here. Jonathan Wilson, served as co-producer and also mixed the tracks, while Drew Erickson played piano, organ, and scored the string arrangements. Emily Elhaj, Olsen�s longtime bandmate, was a consistent collaborator as well, on the bass throughout.

�And I can�t fit into the past that you�re used to, I refuse to,� she sings as a wraithlike piano scaffolds her hopeful voice on �Ghost On�. �Forget the old dreams,� she rejoices on �Go Home�, �I got a new thing.� Darkness inherently suggests depth, but it takes a much wiser writer to find meaning and complexity in the luminous place that Big Time occupies. �Chasing the Sun� ends the record in a smiling, romantic place, a verdant crescendo rising as she pines: �Write a postcard to you / when you�re in the other room/ I�m just writing to say that I can�t find my clothes / If you�re lookin for something to do.�

The burning of her earliest work is still here, of course, but this time she�s �freed from the longing / for one moment to last� and she�s ready to �walk through the fires / of all earthly desires.�

The Smile will release their highly anticipated debut album A Light For Attracting Attention in May, 2022 on XL Recordings.

The 13- track album was produced and mixed by Nigel Godrich and mastered by Bob Ludwig. Tracks feature strings by the London Contemporary Orchestra and a full brass section of contempoarary UK jazz players including Byron Wallen, Theon and Nathaniel Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Robert Stillman and Jason Yarde.

The band, comprising Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet's Tom Skinner, have previously released the singles You Will Never Work in Television Again, The Smoke, and Skrting On The Surface to critical acclaim.

Joyce Manor is a band from Torrance, CA consisting of Barry Johnson (vocals/guitar), Chase Knobbe (guitar), Matt Ebert (bass), Neil Hennessy (new drummer, from The Lawrence Arms). Johnson and Knobbe started the band in 2008 in the Disneyland parking lot, named after an apartment complex that Johnson would walk past every day. Joyce Manor made their debut as an acoustic two-piece. Quickly they learned that playing loud was much more fun and invited friends to join the lineup. The Wall is the 11th studio album by Pink Floyd, originally released in November 1979. It is the last studio album released with the line-up of guitarist David Gilmour, bass guitarist/lyricist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason before Wright left the band. As with Pink Floyd's prior three albums, The Wall is a concept album, exploring themes of abandonment and personal isolation. It is a rock opera that follows Pink, a character whom Waters modelled after himself and the band's original leader, Syd Barrett. Waters conceived the album during Pink Floyd's 1977 In the Flesh Tour, when his frustration with the audience became so acute that he imagined a wall between the audience and the stage. The album was one of the best-selling of 1980, and by 1999 it had sold over 23 million RIAA-certified units, making it the third highest certified album in the United States.

Automatic's second album Excess rides the imaginary edge where the '70s underground met the corporate culture of the '80s - or, as the band puts it, "That fleeting moment when what was once cool quickly turned and became mainstream, all for the sake of consumerism." Using this point in time as a lens through which to view the present moment, Excess takes aim at corporate culture and extravagance. The overarching themes of alienation and escapism emerged as Automatic put Excess together, taking writing retreats to flesh out the new songs before decamping to the studio for sprint recording sessions with producer Joo Joo Ashworth (Sasami, FROTH).

Everything Sucks is the fifth studio album by American punk rock band the Descendents, released in 1996 through Epitaph Records. It was their first album of new studio material since 1987's All, after which singer Milo Aukerman had left the band to pursue a career in biochemistry. The remaining members (bassist Karl Alvarez, guitarist Stephen Egerton, and drummer Bill Stevenson) had changed the band's name to All and released eight albums between 1988 and 1995 with singers Dave Smalley, Scott Reynolds, and Chad Price. When Aukerman decided to return to music the group chose to operate as two acts simultaneously, playing with Aukerman as the Descendents and with Price as All.
